Musicians to surround craft crowd with tunes

By ELIRA BEN-AVARI, Sentinel Correspondent, October 25, 2002

From coast to coast and from as far north as the Arctic Circle, creative artistic and musical expression will fill the streets of Mount Dora this weekend.

And although crafts take center stage, visitors may listen to a variety of musicians keeping the beat on the streets – everything from jazz guitar to a barefoot violinist.

The music will set the mood for the 300,000 expected visitors this weekend who will view more than 320 vendors displaying their artistic wares of paper, wood, pottery, fabric, jewelry and more.

At points along the streets of downtown, local musicians Paul Price and Lisa Perry will be joined by many more acts from around the country:  Tim Janis from New York; barefoot violinist Malcolm Watson of Ojai, Calif.; Chris Lee-Scott from Titusville; Runa Pacha from Tennessee and Marchille Wallis of Port Charlotte.

Innovative Pompano Beach musician Trond will paint a landscape of moods and bring the sounds of the sea with his wind synthesizer.  A yacht captain with a doctorate in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Trond now spends most of his time taking art patrons on musical journeys of the heart with his instrument and style.

"It looks like a space-age electronic clarinet,” Trond, 54, said.  “People get surprised when they hear in one breath an electric guitar solo coming from it, then it will turn into a smooth saxophone.”

Norwegian-born Trond said it plugs into a computer and is able to emulate virtually any instrument.

With this versatility, and the music influences from his travels throughout the world, Trond says he will take listeners from Dixieland to Zanzibar and across the ocean and back.

“A lot of people tell me they see images when they hear my music,” he said.  “Remarkably, it is close to what I experienced when I was composing the piece.”

Inspired by years of studying classical piano and composers such as Mozart, Trond said he is looking forward to hearing feedback from listeners about selections from his newest CD, Gifts from the Ocean.

"All of the music was inspired by my experiences at sea,” he said.  “It is like a memory of the real thing.”

The 18th annual Mount Dora Crafts Fair is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
